What do the vehicle-use questions mean?

These questions help document whether a vehicle may be subject to special tax rules. Answer based on how the vehicle was available and used during the tax year.

When you add a vehicle, Mileage Quest may ask about ownership and personal use. Your answers help create a more complete vehicle record for your organization or tax professional.

What does “Vehicle primarily used by a 5% owner” mean?

Select this option if the person who primarily used the vehicle owned more than 5% of the business during the tax year. This may also apply when the primary user is related to a more-than-5% owner.

If more than one person used the vehicle, base your answer on the person who used it most. If you are unsure about ownership or related-party status, check with your company administrator or tax professional.

What does “Vehicle used for personal tasks while off-duty” mean?

Select this option if the vehicle was available for personal driving outside of work hours. Examples may include commuting, errands, shopping, family travel, or any other non-business use.

A vehicle can be available for personal use even if personal driving was infrequent. If the vehicle was only used for work and personal use was not permitted, do not select this option.

What does “Other vehicles are available for personal tasks” mean?

Select this option if the employee or their household had another vehicle reasonably available for personal driving during the tax year.

For example, select this option if the employee has a personal car that can be used for errands, commuting, or other non-work driving.

If you are unsure how to answer, contact your company administrator or tax professional before submitting the vehicle information.
